We caught up with Katrina Milosevic just before the Christmas holidays to see how life on Ramsay Street treated her and now that her role as Kelly Katsis has come to an end, what’s on the cards for the future.
Unfortunately, Kelly Katsis has left Ramsay Street and Toadie’s life…. What’s next for you?
I’m going to the UK and Europe next week for a month. I arrive in London on Christmas Eve, but don’t have anything planned from there. I’m going with my Mum and brother and we don’t know what we’ll be doing on Christmas day, we’ll work it out as we go along. I’m so disorganised, I’m leaving on Tuesday and I haven’t organised anything.
How did you feel when you got the role on Neighbours?
I was chuffed…really, really excited. I’ve been a fan of the show since I can remember. Watching Neighbours has always been my secret pleasure. When I arrived on set I was like oh my god I’ve got to be so professional now, but inside I was gushing.
Where were you when you got the call?
That’s a funny story, I was in Broadmeadow Shopping Centre doing a fashion parade which was a crack-up in itself as I’m no model, but I did a favour for a friend who has a store in the fashion centre, so it was me and a whole bunch of skinny models. So then I got the phone call and it was just hilarious, so yeah I remember exactly where I was.
What was it like working so closely with Ryan and Morgan?
Lovely, they are so professional. Ryan is such an amazing guy. Unfortunately in my first week working on Neighbours I lost my Dad, so everything was pretty much a blur for me. Ryan was so supportive and really patient with me. And Morgan is great, he’s going to be a real star one day that kid. Working on Neighbours was exactly what I needed at that time. I’ve been so grateful for it. They are like a family, such a good bunch of people. Everyone just works really hard and really fast, I just take my hat off to the younger ones who get popped in to this world of really hard work and really high exposure, while they are still at school!
So what’s been your favourite moment on Neighbours?
I think for me was when we went out to a vineyard to film Libby and Dan’s engagement party. The atmosphere was really beautiful, it was such a stunning place. There was this massive rainbow that appeared while we were filming. It was really magical and it came across on screen beautifully. The colours were really vivid.
What actor/s were you the closest to?
I’ve known Carla before Neighbours, and I really like Nat Blaire. Also Jane Hall, I love her. But I love all of them, they’re all great.
How would you describe Kelly and what did you get out of playing the character?
She is a real nurturer, she’s strong but also sensitive, she’s funny and a bit witty, but it takes a bit to get to know her. She’d be your best friend or your worst enemy. She knows her own mind. I’ve really enjoyed playing her. She really has the ability to explore lots of avenues because her core is so strong, and you could put her in a lot of different situations. She’s a bit fiery and at the same time she is very soft. People aren’t just two dimensional, we are complex. I loved the fact that she is just a normal person with values and strengths and a great deal of self belief. It’s a really positive thing to have in the show. I hope there have been people out there that have seen her and recognised themselves, and learnt from and got strength from little things she does, that would be awesome. I think that’s what Neighbours aims at, it’s really necessary that the audience feels safe and secure but see their own life reflected in the characters and storylines. You live with the characters for so long, you go through it with them, and you go through the same things, you lose someone and one of your favourite characters loses someone so you live through it with them.
Have you got a funny moment you experienced with Toadie that we didn’t see on screen?
It was our first kiss, when we were rehearsing we were mucking about and we didn’t really do it, but when they called action apparently I looked so shocked when he kissed me, we ended up rolling around on the floor laughing. And then the second time when we kissed under the mistletoe and we went in to kiss and we missed… and we burst out laughing. It was so funny, we had so much fun in those kissing scenes.
Do you have anything on your Christmas wish list?
I would like just to be content and at peace. It’s been such a tumultuous year, I’d love to just feel peace. And I want to just get a nice break, and replenish.
Hopes for the future?
Just to be an actor….basically.
It’s her love, and with a strong background in theatre and television, Katrina wants to give comedy a go and has a possible role in a comedy series around the corner, cross fingers. She’d also like to try her hand at doing a feature film. Actually, there’s so much she wants to do. And just like her character Kelly Katsis, there doesn’t seem to be much holding her back.
Thanks Katrina, we hope you celebrate a wonderful white” Christmas!
Farewell Katrina Milosevic

19 Dec 2008
She was a breath of fresh air for tired-in love Toadfish when she walked in to his life as Callum's teacher and hot new love interest - supporting him through some pretty rocky patches and changing his life for the better.
