After Audrey’s sudden health woes, Karl and Susan do the awkward exes kitchen dance. “I know that you love her too,” she says. “I love her more, though,” she doesn’t say. Karl assures her that Audrey will be fine, because doctors know things about animal illnesses too.
At Charlie’s, Michael and Emilia are sitting down for a drink when Lucas arrives. Michael is clearly uncomfortable with their PDA and shuffles in his seat until Priya breaks the silence. She’s there to see Lucas – she knows his leave was approved, but ‘unfortunately’ she’s going to have to withdraw it. He understands, right? “It shouldn’t really have been approved in the first place.”
“Welcome to the new regime,” Michael says, clinking his drink, and Priya heads out to continue her quest for more staff members. Surprisingly, her next stop is Harold’s, to ask Kate to come back to the school. Priya is pleading in a truly pathetic way, but the elder Ramsay girl is not interested. In fact, she seems determined not to be tied down at all.
Paul relishes in Priya’s frustration: “First day going well then.” The new principal smiles back at him with teeth clenched and continues on her merry way.
Karl arrives home from the vet. He hesitates before heading to Toadie’s, where he delivers the bad news to Susan. Audrey has a liver shunt, and there’s nothing the vet can do. In fact, she will be coming around that night to put Audrey to sleep.
At Harold’s, Michael recaps his first day at school for Emilia. Priya is determined to run things her way and he’s not thrilled. So not thrilled, in fact, that he binned his lesson plans. Emilia suggests he probably needs them in order to keep his job, so they sneak into the school under the cover of darkness to go bin scabbing.
“What’s our cover story if the cleaners catch us?” Emilia says, forgetting that Michael works at the school and is actually probably allowed to be there. He’s happy to grab his things and leave, but Emilia does a little roleplaying. Too much roleplaying, as it turns out – Priya swings by and locks the door with them inside, in the dark.
Lucas is at Charlie’s, waiting for his girlfriend to turn up. He confides in Toadie: he thinks Emilia is The One. And he doesn’t think there’s any point in waiting to tell her just how he feels.
Of course, Emilia is now canoodling with Michael under his desk. “I like who I am with you,” he says. “Always have.” They let themselves out with Michael’s key, and Emilia heads to Charlie’s, where Lucas has three special words for her.
The vet arrives at Number Thirty. Audrey is gone.
