Summer arrived in Ramsay Street with her brother Boyd.  Following the death of their mother the two kids were shipped off to live with their grandmother Reverend Rosie Hoyland while their father was away working on the rigs in the Timor Gap.  However, after a series of tests Summer was diagnosed with a serious heart condition which forced her father back on dry land, to Ramsay Street.

From the death of her mother at such a young age, Summer started developing close relationships with older woman and struck up a friendship with Steph Scully, and she quickly began to see Steph as a substitute for her mother and started trying to match-make her with Max, her father, which eventually led to the marriage of Steph to Max Hoyland.

Summer was put forward by her music teacher for a scholarship at the Gillard School of Performance and Music, a boarding school located in Wangaratta. While Summer was away, Steph had a little boy named Charlie Hoyland.  However, soon after the couple's relationship struck troubled waters and Max eventually left Erinsborough to take a job on the rigs.

While Summer returns to Erinsborough in controversial circumstances, the stunning 16-year-old is welcomed with open arms by her step-grandmother Lyn Scully (Janet Andrewartha) who is convinced the teenager can do no wrong. The neighbourhood soon finds out this isn’t the case.
