Susan comes up with a plan to skilfully handle the difficult situation Nicola has put Karl in. Instead of getting angry, she tells Karl to diffuse the situation by pretending to care about Nicola, appealing to her need for friends in her vulnerable state. Maybe she’ll retract her claim that Karl was the one who ordered the unauthorised blood test of Pete Ferguson, or maybe she won't!
Karl is furious with Nicola for her betrayal. She has accused him of ordering the blood test on Pete Ferguson without his consent, leading to Karl's temporary suspension at the hospital pending a full investigation in to the matter. Karl is overcome with anger, however Susan has an idea. Instead of telling Nicola exactly what he thinks of her, appeal to her vulnerable state and need for friendship and support, at a time when she doesn’t have any, and get her back on side.

When he approaches Nicola, he finds out why she is blaming him for the blood test. She thinks the hospital will overlook a misdemeanour from Karl, and he will be reinstated. However, if she is going to get sick she cannot afford to lose her job. Karl pleads with Nicola to take her claim back, saying they can stand and fight this together. However she refuses to withdraw her claim that it was Karl who ordered the blood test, leaving Karl completely helpless.
